Minetest è un motore grafico e software libero attualmente in sviluppo (fase alpha) per creare diversi giochi basati sull'esperienza di gioco con i voxel, ispirato da InfiniMiner, Minecraft, e simili. Minetest è stato creato originariamente da Perttu Ahola (alias “celeron55”).

L'idea di base di ogni gioco è sempre la stessa: il/la giocatore/trice è gettato/a in un enorme mondo fatto di cubi/blocchi. La maggior parte delle volte, questi cubi compongono il paesaggio e questi blocchi possono essere tolti e messi quasi completamente liberamente. Utilizzando gli oggetti raccolti, si possono assemblare nuovi attrezzi e altri oggetti. Comunque, i giochi in Minetest possono essere molto più complessi di così.

Un concetto centrale di Minetest è la capacità integrata di usare moduli, basata sul linguaggio di programmazione Lua. I moduli permettono di modificare uno o più aspetti di un gioco esistente. I mod di Minetest possono essere tanto semplici da aggiungere qualche blocco decorativo quanto molto complessi (per esempio) introducendo nuovi concetti di stile di gioco o generando un tipo di mondo completamente diverso, e molte altre cose. Per il/la giocatore/trice, l'utilizzo di un mod richiede la copia e l'estrazione di qualche file in un certo percorso e di premere qualche pulsante nell'interfaccia di Minetest.

Minetest si può giocare da soli/e o in rete assieme a utenti multipli.

Di solito Minetest è impacchettato con un semplice gioco predefinito, chiamato “Minetest Game”. Si possono scaricare altri giochi per Minetest dai forum ufficiali di Minetest.

Si può giocare con Minetest e il Minetest Game, ma al momento sono entrambi in fase alpha, questo significa che non sono completi, mancano molte funzionalità e ci sono bug. Perciò per favore perdonateci quando non tutto funziona perfettamente.
